Being Recognised as One of the Top African Brands
AJABENG made its international debut at Arise Fashion Week 2020, receiving recognition as one of the Top 8 African Brands by a panel that included Naomi Campbell.
The brand has since worked with African creatives Daniel Obasi, photographer Stephen Tayo, and others. They have been featured in Clash Magazine, modelled by Ghanaian indie music sensation Amaarae, and have been worn by Cape Verdean songstress Mayra Andrade on IndustrieAfrica!
But most importantly, their enthusiasm for promoting other young African creatives in the industry is a close second to the dedication of keeping their fashion’s ecosystem sustainable by making the most of biodegradable materials in their clothing.
Why We Love the Direction They’re Running In
AJABENG describes themselves as an “Afro-minimalist” brand that takes pride and pleasure in producing easy-to-wear fashion and modern tailoring. They are dedicated to combining vibrant styles of traditional African clothing with Accra’s streetwear throughout their collections.
How African Heritage is Making Fashion Eco-Friendly
But how do they keep their clothing production sustainable? For starters, founder Travis Obeng-Casper decided to mix traditional handweaving techniques with wool and cotton to create a hybrid Ghanaian textile. He aimed to revisit African heritage to celebrate what could be achieved with AJABENG’s designs and find a modern way to represent it, which you’ve gotta admire.
Not only did he achieve this, he mastered it until he was able to keep a softer, lighter and durable feel in the brand’s clothing. Today, AJABENG’s goal is to integrate Ghanaian handwoven textiles into everyday wear.
